Barbate and its Surroundings
BARBATE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
Maritime village, right at the mouth of the Barbate river, surrounded by natural enclaves of great ecological value: The marshes of the river Barbate and the pine forest of la Breña, both enclaves declared Natural Park, Barbate is a town that basically lives from the sea, either by fishing and the canning industry or by tourism.
Barbate is a place to live it, the charm and friendliness of its people, the tranquillity with which it is lived, the possibility of tasting fresh and high quality marine delicacies, its magical sunsets and an environment that invites you to explore it on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by boat… These are aspects that make this southern town such an attractive place.
Barbate is a place to be experienced.
Barbate is surrounded by protected natural areas: To the south the marshes of the river Barbate, to the north the pine forest of La Breña, the tombolo and the natural park of Cabo de Trafalgar, to the northeast with The protected natural area of the Acebuchales de la Campiña Sur de Cádiz, declared a site of community importance and special conservation area, to the southwest… the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean.
Few municipalities enjoy a municipality with so many natural spaces and such a variety of ecosystems, to get to know them we can do it on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by boat, a whole experience is, for example, to visit the tuna trap, located a short distance from the coast and where we can learn, from professional experts, this ancient fishing technique.
Walk through the numerous trails that cross the Pinar de la Breña.
Walk the numerous routes that cross the pine forest of La Breña, marvel at the views from the top of the cliff, visit the tower of Meca, the ravines, the Tower of Tajo or the Mondragón stream, all routes are of low intensity, so they are within the reach of almost everyone, an immersion in living nature that is very comforting.
For lovers of ornithology, the marshes of the Barbate river are a special place. An ecosystem of blurred borders in which sea and land follow one another and alternate, resulting in special conditions of refuge and abundant food for its inhabitants.
In addition to the beaches of Barbate, there are other very attractive and beautiful beaches:
Family beaches are ideal for families.
The beaches further north are ideal for families: El Palmar (Vejer) and La Fontanilla (Conil) or la Barrosa (Chiclana) are very popular, wide and long beaches, excellent for spending a nice day and admiring the sunset.
The beaches to the south are virgin and wilder beaches, hardly urbanised: The Retín beach is an oasis of peace, due to its size and the scarce parking space. Further south we find the Playa de Bolonia, an exceptional beach, one of the best in Europe, with its majestic dune. The Playa de Valdevaqueros is ideal for windsurfers and kite surfers, and it is incredible to see its horizon full of multicoloured kites from kite-surfers.
